Fleetwood bring in Shola Ameobi

Fleetwood have signed veteran striker Shola Ameobi on a contract until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old was at Bolton earlier this season, where he scored two goals in ten appearances.

The Nigerian was released by the financially strapped Trotters last month and has since been searching for a new club.

Ameobi began his career with Newcastle where he scored 53 goals in 312 appearances over a fourteen year spell.

Whilst at Newcastle the striker spent time on loan Stoke in 2008, where he helped the Potters reach promotion to the Premier League.

After leaving Newcastle in 2014 Ameobi played for Gaziantep BB in Turkey, Crystal Palace and most recently Bolton.

Fleetwood manager Steven Pressley told the club’s official website, “In January we signed a number of younger players and it was vital to the group that we brought in a player with experience.

“We certainly couldn’t get any more experience than Shola Ameobi and we are absolutely delighted with that. He is not only a very good player; he is a terrific character that can bring a lot to the group.

“It is vital that he has been playing as sometimes unattached players at this stage in the season, the one thing they are lacking is a level of fitness.

“Shola has been involved at Bolton Wanderers on a regular basis for the vast majority of the season and he is raring to go ahead of Saturday’s trip to Port Vale.”

Fleetwood are currently battling against relegation to League Two. They are sitting in 21st place in the table and face a trip to Port Vale tomorrow.
