League Two side Newport County have completed the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White on a season-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old, who is most comfortable at centre-back, starred for the Albion’s under-23 last season as they reached the last-16 of the Checkatrade Trophy, before losing to eventual winners Coventry.

White also made two appearances for Chris Hughton’s first-team, making his senior debut for the club against Oxford United in the EFL Cup before featuring in a 4-0 win over Colchester United in the same competition.

Newport boss Michael Flynn is clearly very happy to have strengthened the club’s backline, and told the club’s website: “This is a big coup for the club.  I’m delighted to get Ben in.

“He’s got a very high pedigree, and is tipped to play Premier League in his future career, and I know we’ve beaten off a lot of interest as Ben was involved with Brighton & Hove Albion’s first team over the summer.”

White had been training with Brighton’s first-team earlier this summer as they prepare for life in the Premier League, but with first-team opportunities likely to be limited in the top-flight, the defender jumped at the chance to join the Exiles.

“I’m delighted to have signed a loan deal with Newport County AFC.” said White. “After speaking to the manager, I knew that I wanted to come to this club and help push the team forward this season.

“After four seasons at under-23s, I’m also looking forward to testing myself in league football against experienced players.”
