Plymouth’s change of kit ‘for fans’, not due to pitch clash

Plymouth boss Derek Adams said the reason they wore their away strip in last night’s home defeat to Blackpool last night was to please fans, not because of a clash with the pitch.

Argyle, second in League Two, lost their sixth home game of the season last night, as the Seasiders comfortably swatted them aside with two first-half Mark Cullen goals and a third from Jordan Flores, 25 minutes from time.

It was a huge win for Gary Bowyer’s men, who have drawn far too many games this season, but a disappointing night for the Pilgrims, who strangely wore their away kit on home turf.

Adams’ side have worn four variations of their all-green kit this season, most recently opting for white shorts and socks, and the 41-year-old manager said before losing to Notts County last month: “We have changed the kit about a bit because of the reason that the kit is too dark.

“It blends in with the seating and it blends in with the grass, and that’s the reason we have changed it for a number of home games this season.”

However, last night, the decision to wear the away kit was apparently a spontaneous one, and nothing to do with the surroundings, with Adams simply saying before the game: “A number of fans don’t get to see the away kit, and it’s a fitting night to do it.

EFL rule that says clubs can change their kit for one home game each season, and afterwards, the 41-year-old Argyle boss added: “There was no reason [for the change of kit], it’s just that tonight was the night we were going to do it.”

Argyle have lost all four games played at Home Park on Tuesday nights this season – they’re going to have to try something more than a change of kit to improve that form.
