Eoin Doyle eager to get going at Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s latest recruit Eoin Doyle has spoken of his eagerness to get going at his new club, and the excitement of linking up with former boss Paul Cook again.

The striker, 28, who joined Pompey on Deadline Day from Preston, will remain at Fratton Park until the end of the season and cannot wait to get started after a difficult time in the Championship.

After joining The Lilywhites permanently in July, Doyle has made just 11 appearances all season, scoring three times, and was infamously sent off at Hillsborough when he fought with teammate Jermaine Beckford.

However, the Irishman says that fiasco is now behind him, and told Radio Solent: “The size of the club and the passionate supporters were a big part in me wanting to come here, so I jumped at the opportunity.

“I can’t wait to get out there and help Pompey achieve. I wish Saturday [away against Wycombe] was happening now.

“I won’t be short of running around, I’m honest and will be in the box a lot. I’m just a hard grafter.”

Portsmouth are again chasing League Two promotion this season, after suffering defeat in the play-offs at the end of the last campaign, and Doyle is hoping to rediscover the success he and Cook have experienced together in the past.

Cook was Doyle’s boss at Sligo Rovers, where they won an Irish League Cup and two FAI Cup’s together, and was also the man who signed the striker at Chesterfield in 2013.

It proved to be another successful spell for the pair, with Doyle’s goals and Cook’s leadership guiding the Spireites to League Two promotion in 2014 and the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, and the forward wants more of the same on the South Coast.

“We had some good times in Ireland and then did well in the league with Chesterfield,” said Doyle.

“I’ve done well for him [Cook] in the past, so hopefully there’s more success to come.”
