Notts County boss Kevin Nolan is eyeing a move for former West Ham teammate Carlton Cole as the club near the end of their transfer embargo.

The Magpies have been troubled by embargo issues for nearly a year, but Nolan is hopeful the Magpies will be free to sign players in the next “48-72 hours”.

And, when the embargo is finally lifted, Nolan already has his eye on Cole, a former England international, to fire the club away from the relegation zone.

The 33-year-old striker is a free-agent after a spell at Celtic and in the USA, and Nolan told BBC Nottingham: “We have had a chat. It would be fantastic if I could bring him over.

“The best thing is to see if he is interested and we can work something out. He has a few things in the fire.

“He will be a breath of fresh air. He is a top pro and a good player. If we can make it happen and the embargo gets lifted, then we will try our best to do that.”

A horrific run of one point from a possible thirty has seen Notts County slump to 23rd, just one place above the foot of the Football League, but the signing of Cole could yet play a big part in the race for survival.
