Pompey boss Cook ‘sorry’ for reaction to McGeehan injury

Portsmouth boss Paul Cook has apologised for the reaction that came from some sections of the Fratton Park crowd after Luton’s Cameron McGeehan broke his leg during Monday’s fixture.

Portsmouth boss Paul Cook has apologised for the reaction that came from some sections of the Fratton Park crowd after Luton’s Cameron McGeehan broke his leg during Monday’s fixture.

The 21-year-old midfielder suffered the nasty injury in the early stages of Luton’s narrow 1-0 defeat to play-off rivals Pompey, and some sections of the home support reportedly sang “You’re going home in an ambulance” to the young Hatter while he was down.

Immediately after the game, Nathan Jones said Portsmouth fans showed a lack of ‘class’, and his counterpart Cook told Radio Solent: “If they [the Pompey fans] knew what they know now, they would be generally disappointed with how they reacted.

“The incident [McGeehan being treated on the pitch] went on for some time and I think people got caught up in the clamour.

“It was a moment I don’t think our fans realised the extent of the boy’s injury. By the time they had, it was obviously too late and we’ve let ourselves down, there’s no issue about that.

“We feel everything as a club and, as a club, we don’t want to be letting ourselves down. We want people to speak about us really well.

“It’s a sad incident for Cameron, he’s got a very bright future in the game.

“All we can do is apologise for our behaviour in that moment and wish Cameron a speedy recovery.”

McGeehan has scored an impressive 11 goals in 28 games so far this season for Luton, but will now miss the rest of the campaign as Jones’ men fight for promotion.
