Banned Hartlepool United defender Carl Magnay has released a statement through the club denying he spat at a spectator.

The incident occurred at Hartlepool’s away League Two encounter with Wycombe Wanderers on 5 September, a match in which Magnay was sent off.

Receiving his six-match ban nearly two weeks ago, the club expressed its ‘extreme disappointment’ following the FA’s verdict but now the player himself has had his say.

The 26 year-old said: “I categorically deny spitting on anyone and find the allegation made against me inaccurate. This is something I find abhorrent and simply would not do.

“There is no reaction by those in the vicinity where I spit, something which is supported by the video evidence.

“I would like to thank everyone connected with Hartlepool United for their support and I look forward to representing the Club again once my ban is complete.”

As throughout the process of Magnay’s misconduct charge the club reiterated their full support with Chief Executive Russ Green adding: “I am still astounded by the charge and the Club’s support remains fully with Carl.

“I know that doing something like that is not in Carl’s nature and it’s disappointing for him and for the Club that we will be without him for a period of time.

In addition to being banned Magnay was also fined £750.
