Council give green light to Brentford stadium move

BRENTFORD have been given the provisional go-ahead for a new 20,000-seater stadium.

The Bees were granted planning permission for the Lionel Road development by Hounslow Council on Thursday evening but must also get the backing of the Mayor of London and Secretary of State.

Should that be attained, the Bees will look to move into their new home ahead of the 2016/17 season.

The League One club have been at their current ground, Griffin Park, for over a century, having first moved there in 1904.

Despite that history, club chief executive Mark Devlin says the move is necessary to take the club forward.

Speaking to BBC London 94.9, he said: “For a lot of fans it will be emotional as it will mean eventually leaving Griffin Park.

“The overwhelming majority understand if we are going to try and build a club that will sustain itself a division up then we need to move.

“It will allow us to hopefully grow and develop up into the Championship, not be a one-season wonder and sustain ourselves there.”
