Northampton have beaten a host of clubs to the signing of Cheltenham striker Billy Waters for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old starred upfront for the Robins last season, scoring 16 goals upon their return to League Two before deservedly being crowned the club’s Player of the Season.

After turning down a new deal at the end of the season, Waters attracted the interest of teams such as Plymouth, Lincoln City and Forest Green Rovers, but has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal at Sixfields.

Cobblers boss Justin Edinburgh told the club’s official website: “We are delighted to have signed Billy.

“He was a key target for us and we feel he will provide a good balance to the other strikers we have at the club.

“Billy is an excellent age, he has hunger and desire to keep his career on its upward curve and we think he will fit in well.

“He is a mobile striker who knows where the goal is. He plays with his heart on his sleeve, he will run all day and supporters will warm to his all action, committed style of play.

“This is part of an approach we have been developing with the Chairman which looks at younger players with potential to develop alongside our experienced players and we appreciate the backing to be able to do this.”
