Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon looks set to leave the League One struggler’s and return to former club Tranmere Rovers.

The 44-year-old Scot, who enjoyed two separate spells at Tranmere as a player and appeared 172 times for the club, is also set to take his assistant Mike Jackson to Prenton Park with him.

Mellon will replace former Rovers boss Gary Brabin, who was sacked by the National League side on September 18th, and Tranmere have won just once in seven game since to slump to ninth in the division.

After taking over at New Meadow in 2014, it has been a mixed time in charge of the Shrews for Mellon.

In his first season in charge, he impressively guided the club to promotion from League Two, but could only manage a 20th place finish last season and leaves them in 22nd place now.

His side also crashed out of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday and Mellon has come under an increasing amount of pressure from fans.

With Mellon’s departure,  goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne is expected to take charge of Shrewsbury’s trip to Bradford on Saturday, while former Blackpool, Millwall and Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway is thought to be in the frame to take the job permanently.
