Talks between Charlton and Chris Wilder break down

Chris Wilder will not become the new Head Coach at Charlton after contract talks broke down this morning.

A statement on Charlton’s official club website read, “Charlton Athletic can confirm that following discussions with Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder and his assistant Alan Knill over the vacant managerial role at The Valley, the club has been unable to reach an agreement.

The club will now continue its search for a candidate to take the club forward. Any further announcements will be made in due course.”

Northampton gave the Addicks permission to speak to Wilder on Monday and the Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas admitted that he would be “very surprised” if the 48-year-old did not complete a move to The Valley.

However it now appears as though Wilder will be returning to Sixfields.

In an interview this afternoon Thomas told Northampton News, “We understand there is further interest in Chris and Alan, however we have had no official approach at this point but I will be sitting down with Chris to discuss further.

“As we said on Monday and in the best interests of the club, we are keen for this matter to be brought to a conclusion as quickly as possible.”

Wilder had a hugely successful season guiding Northampton to the League Two title with 99 points, despite the club facing huge financial problems at the beginning of the campaign.
