Dean Smith signs new deal with Saddlers

League One leaders Walsall have moved to keep a hold of manager Dean Smith with both parties putting pen-to-paper on a 12-month rolling contract.

Smith’s deal was set to expire at the end of the season and he was the subject of a recent approach from Rotherham United.

The 44 year-old has been in charge at the Banks’s Stadium since 2011 and is the fourth longest serving manager in the top four divisions of English football.

Smith expressed his delight at the new contract, telling the club’s official website “I’ve enjoyed my time in charge so far and I’m still learning everyday.

“I feel like I’m getting better as a manager and I just want to keep developing.”

The Saddlers boss has built up a good relationship with the Walsall faithful and is affectionately known as “Ginger Mourinho” by the fans.

Walsall have had a fantastic start to the season and are currently top of League One. They face Chesterfield at the Banks’s stadium tomorrow.
