Fleetwood part company with Graham Alexander

By Hugo Varley

Fleetwood Town have parted company with manager Graham Alexander.

The Cod Army have struggled so far in League One this season and currently sit in 20th place, one point clear of Scunthorpe and Doncaster.

The decision brought forth by three straight league defeats ends Alexander’s three year tenure at the club.

Fleetwood chairman Andy Pilley said: “It is an extremely unpleasant part of being Chairman having to make such a decision, however ultimately, for a number of reasons; I felt this was in the best interests of the club.

“I would like to place on record my personal thanks for the success Graham brought us with the promotion to League One, his supreme professionalism and for all the hard work he invested over his time here at Fleetwood, and wish him all the best for the future.”

Alexander replaced Mickey Mellon as manager when the club were the newly-promoted Conference side, and within 18 months would steer the Reds’ to victory in the League Two play-off final.

The Scot – who held a previous role at Preston North End as youth coach – enjoyed a successful follow-up season in League One where the team finished 10th.

Fleetwood fell to a 5-1 defeat at Gillingham last night and travel to Scunthorpe on Saturday.
