Sheffield United favourite Deane joins academy coaching staff

By Hugo Varley

Fans-favorite Brian Deane has become an academy coach at Sheffield United. The former striker made 224 appearances for the Blades and scored 94 times in his three playing spells at the club.

Deane, who also represented Leeds, Benfica, Middlesbrough, Leicester and West Ham, will work with the club’s young players and provide assistance to the under-21 and under-18 sides.

The former player famously scored the first ever Premier League goal during his time at the Blades when he netted against Manchester United at Bramall Lane.

Deane left his job as manager of Norwegian club Sarpsborg 08 last year and expressed his excitement at his new role, telling the club’s official website “Following discussions with vice chairman David Green and Nick Cox, we identified I could work with the emerging strikers here at the SteelPhalt Sheffield United Academy, passing on my experiences from the game, coaching and generally help with the development of the strikers across a number of age groups.”

Sheffield United are currently sitting in seventh place in League One and face struggling Doncaster on Saturday.
