Is Gareth Southgate the man to finally bring England World Cup Glory?

How many big tournaments have gone by when the media and fans have praised the Three Lions and expected them to go all the way and win some silverware but they have returned home empty handed and with their tails between their legs?

Even the so called “golden generation” with players such as Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Scholes and the big names go on and on have entered the big tournaments and done nothing but let their fans down.

The English FA have often tried to bring in big foreign names as their head coach with the likes of Fabio Capello and Sven Goran Erikson but both failed when it came to performing on the big stage.

The FA have tried to bring in some of the more successful English managers to do the job to with names such as Terry Venables, Bobby Robson, Glen Hoddle and Kevin Keegan to name a few but once again all these managers failed to win silverware.

Gareth Southgate was a fairly strange call at the time as Sam Allardyce was sacked after being involved in a bugging episode that eventually lead to him losing his dream job in charge of England.

Unlike the previous big ego managers that I listed above, Gareth comes into the job with a smaller ego and a wealth of playing experience at the highest level, having played for England on 57 occasions as well as making over 500 appearances for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough in his club playing days.

The players will have respect for the former defender and the young players will gain a lot of experience from the savvy young coach. Since getting the job he has made some brave decisions such as dropping Wayne Rooney and bringing in a wealth of young talent into the England set up.

He is very much focused on the future and the future may be bright for England after the under 21 team managed to win the U21 World Cup last year. If Gareth can get eh English team playing exciting and attacking football with the young exciting players he has at his disposal, then this may be the year that England are able to finally live up to the big labels and lift the trophy.

Personally, I feel like Gareth may fall short when he comes up against the likes of some of the more tactically advanced managers like Loew from Germany for example but let’s see what Gareth can deliver in the next months’ World Cup.
