League Two side Morecambe have completed the signing of New Zealand international Steve Old on a one-year contract.

The 31-year-old central defender, who has 17 caps for his country, is vastly experienced having started his career with local club Manawatu United, before enjoying a spell in Scotland with Kilmarnock and spending time playing in Australia and China.

Old spent last season plying his trade in Sweden, captaining GAIS, and although international clearance is still required, Jim Bentley is delighted with his latest recruit.

Speaking to the club’s website about Old, the Shrimps boss said: “Steven is a very experienced player, who has had some really high points throughout his career.

“He’s been a captain at previous clubs and has good leadership qualities, which we need within our squad.

“I’ve done a lot of research on him and he comes very highly recommended and I’ve also watched hours of games and clips from his time abroad and have been very impressed with what I’ve seen.

“He’s a strong, physical player and technically and tactically very good. We’re looking forward to getting him onboard and working with him, hopefully he will become a big player for Morecambe Football Club.”
