Chesterfield boss Gary Caldwell has said he stands by comments he made telling negative fans not to come to games.

The former Wigan boss, 34, was appointed in charge of the Spireites in January, but has failed to win one of his seven games in charge of the side, and lost 4-0 to Oxford on Saturday

That defeat left the League One side six points adrift of safety, and Caldwell said in the aftermath: “When there is criticism and negativity from the sides it doesn’t help. If you want to show negativity, then don’t come.”

At the time, the comments angered some Chesterfield fans, but the Scot stands by what he said and told Radio Sheffield: “I say what I feel. It’s very emotional when you’ve just lost 4-0.

“The message I was trying to give them was that this team needs them to be positive and get behind the team.

“I accept that some people may have taken it the wrong way, but we need our supporters more now than ever.”

Chesterfield take on Walsall tonight in another important game, and Caldwell will want his players to fight for the shirt, and for survival.

After being thrashed by Oxford, Caldwell questioned the mentality of his squad, and said: “Forget the game and tactics, it’s about desire.

“The players have to show a desire and a focus for this club to keep them in this division. They have to take responsibility.

“I knew this was a challenge when I came in but the overall resilience and desire in the group has disappointed me.”
