Wotton: Plymouth’s Green Army reason for brilliant away form

Plymouth’s first-team coach Paul Wotton has heralded the club’s supporters as the reason for Argyle’s stunning away form this season.

Two Graham Carey penalties and Jordan Slew’s third goal of the season meant Plymouth claimed a battling win at basement club Newport on Saturday, a victory that sealed their sixth consecutive three points on the road.

They are now four points clear at the top of the division and on the brink of breaking an away record that has stood since 1929.

Wotton says it is all thanks to the Green Army, and told the The Herald: “Some away games feel like a home game with the number of fans we’ve got there.

“Especially with a London game, with the supporters’ branch there, and at Newport on Saturday we must have had equal number of fans.”

With the Green Army occupying the away end at Rodney Parade with over 1000 fans at the weekend, Wotton says the support acts as massive motivation for the players.

However, after coming so close to promotion last season, with an agonising play-off final defeat condemning Argyle to another season in League Two, the first-team coach says not much has changed in terms of their preparation for away games.

He said: “We don’t do anything in preparation for an away game that we wouldn’t do for a home game – the only thing is the travelling, but we are where we are and travelling is what it is.

“We get to stay in great hotels, we get looked after really well, the food is great, the boys get everything they need to prepare properly for the game.

“We’re fortunate that we don’t travel on the day to the games so the boys get a good night’s sleep, but as to the actual games there’s not a dramatic difference.”
