McCann wants to keep ‘special’ McGee at Peterborough

Peterborough United manager Grant McCann has said he would love to keep on-loan goalkeeper Luke McGee at the club on a longer deal.

The 21-year-old shot-stopper, who is on loan at Posh from Tottenham until January, has played seven times for McCann’s side so far this season.

The Northern Irishman said: “We’d love him [McGee] here until beyond, never mind the end of the season and to be one of our players.

“But Tottenham think highly of him – he’s been on the bench for their first team in the Premier League.”

Indeed, McGee was named on the bench on two occasions last season at White Hart Lane, when Hugo Lloris was struggling with injury, and the hierarchy at the Premier League club are thought to rate him highly.

And despite not keeping a clean sheet in a side that has never struggled to score in recent years but often falters at the other end, McGee has settled well at the ABAX stadium and fought off competition from Mark Tyler to make the no. 1 shirt his own.

With impressive penalty saves against Southend and MK Dons last month, McGee is becoming increasingly popular with supporters, but McCann is already a massive fan and the boss said: “He’s been first-class since he’s come in.

“Not just his performances on the pitch but his whole demeanour around the building.

“He’s a young lad but he’s come in with a 27, 28-year-old’s shoulders on him. He demands of people in training, if you don’t track a runner he’s out of his goal shouting at you.

“It’s exactly what you need from your goalkeeper. With his ability as well, you’ve got somebody special.”
