Former Newport County midfielder Michael Flynn has rejoined the club’s coaching staff, this time as part of Graham Westley’s new-look backroom team.

Since he was appointed at the Welsh club last week, Westley’s has overseen a host of coaching changes with the appointment of Dino Maarima as his assistant and the departure of Sean McCarthy, who was in charge of the side after Warren Feeney was sacked.

And now former player Flynn, who was a first-team coach at the club under John Sheridan, will link up with Westley as he plots Newport’s return to form.

Westley told the club’s website: “He [Flynn] knows the football club.

“One of the most important things when you come from afar is someone really close who’s on your side, who is helping you run the football club and make sure you don’t make basic errors.”

The Newport based Flynn began his career with the Exiles and went on to make over 100 appearances for them in three separate spells in a career that also included time at Wigan, Blackpool, Huddersfield and Gillingham.

Over the close-season, Flynn began a new role at Newport as the Football and Business director, but Westley has quickly appointed him as part of the backroom staff.

The Exiles boss said: “There are certain financial aspects for what you can and can’t do at any football club so for certain people to arrive, certain people have to go.

“There’s nothing personal in any decision that gets made in these situations.

“I’ve met Michael, I knew Michael and he’s coming in to work with us as well so we’ve got a strong team there.”
