Charlton assistant grateful for international break

Charlton’s assistant manager Kevin Nugent says the coaching staff at the club have used the international break to analyse the side’s performances.

The Addicks have struggled for consistency this season, and in recent weeks their form has dropped worryingly with their last league win recorded at Walsall on August 20th.

Since then, Russell Slade has seen his side draw five and lose twice and the south London club are now 18th in their first season back in League One since 2012.

Assistant Nugent told the club’s website: “The break has given us a lot of time, certainly as a coaching staff and management team, to really have a look, analyse and think about what we can do to turn what were draws, that have now gone the wrong way, into wins and three points.

“We need to make ourselves hard to beat again and also be a bit more creative – and have that little bit extra –  in the final third of the pitch.”

Charlton’s number two was standing in for Russell Slade at today’s press conference, who is currently struggling with a bug, ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Coventry.

The Sky Blues currently sit bottom of the division, and three points adrift of safety, but claimed their first win of the season in impressive fashion when they beat high-flying Port Vale 2-0 last weekend.

Nugent knows this weekend’s game at The Valley will be tough, and said: “It’s a big game. We’re still quite early in the season but it is a big game, as they all are, and it’s one that we are really looking forward to.

“Coventry have changed their manager recently, they’ve changed their shape around and they’ve just got their first win.

“It’s going to be tough, we know that. We’ve got a few players with some little, niggling injuries but hopefully, come Saturday, we’ll be strong enough to get the three points.”
