Bantams snap up Kilgallon

Former Blade becomes Stuart McCall’s eight summer signing.

Former Blackburn Rovers defender Matt Kilgallon has signed a one-year deal at Bradford City.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after leaving Rovers at the end of the last season, and made 11 appearances during the 2015-2016 campaign.

He spent three years at Blackburn but found it hard to break into the side last season, with Grant Hanley and Shane Duffy forming a great partnership that limited Kilgallon’s chances.

Before his spell in Lancashire, the experienced centre-back, who can also be deployed as a left-back, enjoyed spells in the Premier League with Leeds, Sheffield United and Sunderland.

He cost the Blades £2million in 2007, and along with his Premier League experience, he also played in Europe and the Championship play-off final for Leeds United.

Speaking about the signing, Bantams’ boss Stuart McCall said: “We’re delighted to bring in someone of Matt’s pedigree and experience.

“I’ve spoken to a number of people at Blackburn Rovers and they were all very positive about him.

“I obviously know Matt from his days at Sheffield United and Greg (Abbott, head of recruitment) knows him from his time at Leeds United.

“Killa (Matthew Kilgallon) has played the majority of his career at centre back but I saw him a couple of times playing at left back last season for Blackburn in the Championship, and playing well.

“He’s coming here hungry and desperate to play at the highest level possible.”
