Kemar Roofe named League Two Player of the Year

Oxford United’s Kemar Roofe was named League Two Player of the Year at the Football League Awards last night.

The 23-year-old beat off competition from Bristol Rovers’ Matty Taylor and Northampton Town’s Ricky Holmes to pick up the award.

Roofe told reporters, “I am very proud to be acknowledged and would like to thank everyone at Oxford United who has helped me achieve this. It is good to receive an award but it has been a good season for everyone at the club and now we want to push on and try and finish the season with promotion.”

After leading somewhat of a journeyman career prior to his permanent summer switch to Oxford, Roofe has been League Two’s standout performer, netting 23 goals and helping The U’s to establish themselves in the automatic promotion places.

As well as picking up the League Two Player of the Year award, Roofe was also named in the Football Manager Team of the Season, which selected the best 11 players across the three Football League divisions.

In what was a busy night for the striker, Roofe was also nominated for the Mitre Goal of the Year award for his stunning strike against Brentford back in August but narrowly missed out to Sheffield Wednesday’s Marco Matias.
