Lee Johnson and Sam Winnall pick up League One monthly awards

Barnsley picked up both of the League One monthly awards with Lee Johnson being named Manager of the Month and Sam Winnall named as Player of the Month.

The Tykes have rocketed up the table in recent weeks and won every league game in January, including a superb 6-1 victory over Keith Hill’s Rochdale.

Johnson said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have picked up this award.

“We have picked up some fantastic results against some very good teams both home and away, and credit must go to the staff and players who have really worked hard over the past couple of months, and also the supporters for sticking by us”

Barnsley were certainly helped by the goal scoring form of striker Sam Winnall who netted seven times during the five games in January.

“Sam has spearheaded us during our great run throughout January and scored lots of important goals.

“His hard work has really paid off and he’s scored some fantastic goals for us. He can score different types of goals and the fans really do love him here. Long may it continue” Johnson added

After a poor start to the season, Barnsley have now moved up to 12th place in League One and look increasingly capable of making a challenge for promotion.

The Tykes will be looking to extend their winning run to seven games when they face Bury at Oakwell on Sunday.
