Former Bolton midfielder Holden retires

Former Bolton Wanderers central midfielder Stuart Holden has retired from football after suffering with a chronic knee injury.

The USA international played 38 times for the Trotters, scoring 2 goals and finally conceded defeat to his body 1013 (2 years, 9 months, 6 days) days since his last professional appearance.

Holden’s injury cycle began in 2011 when he broke his leg playing against Manchester United, at a time when the midfielder had been key to the club’s fortunes and were on a five-match unbeaten run.

Holden, now 30, upon his first match back fit would incur nationwide sympathy by tearing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament that would lead to six months out on the sidelines. An injury that would reoccur a further two times: the second time playing for USA against Panama in the Gold Cup, and the third time playing for Bolton’s reserves.

Despite this Holden remains grateful for playing at the highest level and most sincerely for his time with the Trotters.

“From day one I was welcomed to the club with open arms and I have felt part of the Bolton Wanderers family ever since,” the midfielder told Bolton’s official website.

“I will always be a Bolton Wanderers supporter and the club will forever hold a special place in my heart. I’m already looking forward to the next opportunity at which I’m able to come back and say hello to everyone.

“If all we have now are memories then let’s remember the best – beating Blackburn Rovers 2-1 on derby day,” Holden stated.
