Barnet trigger Akinde contract extension

Barnet have acted to deter interest in striker John Akinde by activating a contract extension clause.

The length of the extension has not been disclosed by the Bees, but by triggering the extension they have dumped anxieties that their forward could leave on a free transfer as his contract was set to expire this summer.

The 26-year-old has scored 11 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions this season attracting the rumoured interest of Championship club Wolves, who are searching for a replacement for Benik Afobe.

Barnet revealed the news via their manager Martin Allen in a letter posted to their website.

“This morning I’ve had a chat with John Akinde, and I’ve informed him that the club are taking up the option on his contract,” Allen wrote.

“We’re happy and he’s delighted! So it’s good news all round, and that should now settle everybody down!”
