Clarke to step down from Football League role

Football League chairman Greg Clarke will stand down from his role at the end of the season.

Clarke, who took up the role in March 2010, has overseen the implementation of the Financial Fair Play in the Championship and the Salary Management programme which League One and League Two clubs abide by. Seeing that clubs do not spend what they don’t have as the Football League increases it’s prize money and parachute payments.

Greg Clarke said: “It has been a tremendous privilege to serve Football League clubs over the last six years, they are very much the heart and soul of football in this country.

“I leave with The Football League in excellent health and with solid foundations in place. Our clubs are largely in better financial shape, there is a greater solidarity between our three divisions and we have a cohesive board that is providing progressive leadership to our members.

Two board members will conduct a search for the Football League’s next chairman when Clarke leaves after the conclusion of the AGM in June 2016.
