We’re now in a relegation fight, says Sawyers

Walsall’s attacking midfielder Romaine Sawyers says he and the squad are aware they’re among the clubs that face being relegated from League One.

The Saddlers are without a win in five matches and are part of an ever-increasing tally of clubs sliding towards the drop zone.

Ahead of his team’s game against fellow strugglers Notts County this Friday, Sawyers said, “I’d be lying if I said that relegation wasn’t in the back of our heads but we want to look up.

“If you keep looking down then that’s the direction you’re going to be going in, but if we keep looking forward then we won’t need to worry about that.

“If we stick together and have belief in each other, I’m sure the wins will come again,” Sawyers said.

In the Wembley hangover of their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final defeat, Walsall have continued their drop in form failing to score more than two goals in a game since 10th February 2015.

But Sawyers remains defiant: “We can’t forget what we achieved to get to Wembley, even though it might not have gone as well as we wanted it to go.

“If we start building momentum now, we can have a strong end to the season after our disappointment.”
