Mansfield v Salford postponed due to snowfall

Mansfield against Salford called off after COVID-19 restrictions limit number of people allowed to help clear snow from pitch

Tuesday’s League Two fixture between Mansfield Town and Salford City has been called off due to heavy snowfall.

The playing surface at the One Call Stadium has been deemed unplayable following a pitch inspection at 11.00am on Tuesday.

Mansfield head groundsman Michael Merriman has stated that due to implications of the coronavirus, that the quality of pitch has suffered, and that this fixture would have likely been able to go ahead due to support from volunteers under normal circumstances.

“The pitch is currently covered in an inch of snow and unfortunately, due to the current circumstances we find ourselves in, we are unable to invite supporters/volunteers into the ground to help clear it in time for this evening’s scheduled kick-off,” said Merriman.

“Because of the effects of the pandemic in the close season, we weren’t able this year to prepare the pitch to its full capacity. There is therefore a drainage issue, which is causing a problem with water getting through the surface and into the drain, as will have been noticeable in our last home game against Southend United.”

Currently no new date has been scheduled for the fixture to be played.

This is the tenth postponement during the midweek round of EFL games, but it is the first fixture to be cancelled for reasons other than COVID-19 outbreaks.

Another fixture in League Two has also been called off between Morecambe and Bolton in League Two, but this was due to positive COVID-19 tests.
