Reasons for Hull City’s Unexpected Revival Under Grant McCann

Last season was dire for the Tigers, with crowds dwindling as fan unrest grew with the club owners and team alike.

However, this season has seen a dramatic turnaround, as was partly detailed in a recent interview with The Football League Paper by goalkeeper Matt Ingram.

Here, we delve deeper into the main driving factors behind this sudden reversal of fortunes.

Keane Lewis-Potter – Homegrown Goal Getter

One of the silver linings of losing Premier League and Championship TV revenues is that a club is forced to fall back on its academy products, preparing local ballers for greatness.

Keane Lewis-Potter is one of Hull’s very best, having supported the club as a lad and now knocking in regular League One goals.

Such has been the quality of his recent performances, he received the honour of being named the EFL’s young player of the month in October. The 19-year-old starlet is a decent bet for anyone looking for a first scorer to plump for with their sports free bet, as he continues to give League One defenders hell on a weekly basis.

Grant McCann – Sticking it out

When a team gets relegated it is common practice for the board to panic and clear house over the summer. However, Hull’s board chose to play things differently, counting on Grant McCann’s stellar League One managerial record.

That trustful approach has certainly paid off so far, with the Tigers riding high thanks to a slick passing game combined with solid defensive fundamentals instilled by a manager finding his stride.

Hull City’s George Honeyman celebrates scoring his side’s first goal of the game during the Sky Bet League One match at Highbury Stadium, Fleetwood.

George Honeyman – From Flop to Leader

There were high hopes at the KCOM for George Honeyman when he signed from Sunderland, but he really struggled to impose himself on Championship midfields.

That has certainly not been the case this term, with him clearly being the pivot around which the whole team works. He has even chipped in with some vital goals from midfield.

Mallik Wilks – Class Shining Through

In order to win a league title or to gain promotion a side usually requires a player or two with an element of the x-factor.

Indeed, many of Hull’s problems last season stemmed from them losing two such stars in the form of Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki.

This season, however, the player stepping up to the plate is Mallik Wilks, whose combination of speed, power, and trickery around the box has lit up highlight reels all over the web.
