John McGreal agrees to depart Swindon Town after a month as manager

McGreal has stated that the club was unable to complete any incoming transfers.

John McGreal has decided to leave Swindon Town after one month as the club’s manager.

Swindon Town have mutually agreed to part ways with John McGreal and his assistant Rene Gilmartin. This news comes just under a month after Swindon employed McGreal as manager – following the club’s relegation from League One.

In a club statement, the Robins have put on record the club’s thanks to McGreal and Gilmartin for their “professionalism” when dealing with “very difficult circumstances” surrounding the League Two club’s ownership during their short-lived tenure.

“We would like to thank both, for their hard work and professionalism during their short stay at the County Ground under very difficult circumstances. We would like to wish them both the best for the future.” Read the club statement.

Also included in Swindon’s club statement, was McGreal and Gilmartin’s explanation for their abrupt departure from The County Ground. The pair citing an inability to build a team for the coming season due to the “legal proceedings involving the ownership” not making any incoming transfers possible.

“This is a decision we both have made, as we feel we are not able to carry out our duties as Manager and Assistant Manager. Our intention from day one was to build a football team to compete in this league, but unfortunately due to the current circumstances the club is facing, we do not feel we are able to do that. Read McGreal and Gilmartin’s statement.

“As mentioned earlier this week, we have signings ready to be announced, however the legal proceedings involving the ownership has not allowed us to do so, making our positions at the club untenable.”
