Port Vale sign former Brazil Under-20 international goalkeeper Lucas Covolan

Goalscoring goalkeeper Lucas Covolan has joined Port Vale from Torquay United.

Port Vale have signed Torquay United’s Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Covolan.

Lucas Covolan has left National League side Torquay United and signed a two-year contract with League Two outfit Port Vale.

The former Brazil U20 goalkeeper is best known for his performance in this season’s National Play-Off final, where he headed in a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Hartlepool United and saved two spot-kicks from the resulting penalty shootout – which Torquay lost 5-4 to Hartlepool United.

Port Vale Manager Darrell Clarke has been impressed by Covolan’s performances in the National League and believes the Brazilian “has all the attributes” to make the step up to the Football League.

“Lucas had a very good season with Torquay and has earned his right to move up the ladder. He is hungry to prove he’s a league-level player and we feel he has all the attributes to succeed at this level.” Said Clarke.

The six-foot-three-inch shot-stopper penned an emotional farewell message to the Torquay United and the club’s supporters on his Instagram account – following his move to Vale Park.

“I just want to say my thanks for these two years that I have spent at Torquay United. Within these two years I had the pleasure to meet, live and share memories with wonderful people that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Thank you to everyone involved in my journey, all of you somehow made me a better person today and I want to believe that I did the same for you.” Said Covolan.
