IT WAS with sadness that I saw John Cooke had left his role after 30 years of service as a player and then kit man at Sunderland.
Often one of the key cogs and links between the staff and players, kit men can be worth their weight in gold in terms of camaraderie within a club.
I remember going into Cookie’s room once after the Friday pre-game session and he was taking my match kit out of the skip to travel. “What’s going on I asked?”
