SUCH is the desperate financial state of clubs in the EFL, it was assumed the Premier League had the organisation over a barrel.

The EFL’s decision to reject a £50m rescue package for League One and Two suggests otherwise, but they are playing a dangerous game of poker.
That rejection was motivated by a desire for a fairer – and permanent – distribution of the Premier League’s wealth, and predicated on the looming threat of state intervention.
