Boy wonder Connor can still shine

NINE years ago, I was asked to write a piece about a talented teenager by the name of Connor Wickham.
Aged 17, the striker had announced himself to the world by scoring a sensational slaloming strike for Ipswich.
It was, said former Tractor Boy Kevin Beattie, the best goal ever witnessed at Portman Road. A fortnight later Wickham scored his first – and only – professional hat-trick.
Digging that article out this week, it is striking how convinced its contributors were that Wickham was destined for stardom.
