MILLWALL had never spent a season among English football’s elite – but in 1972 they came within 90 minutes of doing so.
Manager Benny Fenton looked as if he had built a side that would finally end the Lions’ long wait when they spent almost seven months in one of the two automatic promotion slots.
But they fell at the final hurdle, finishing in third place a point behind Birmingham City and two behind Norwich City from whom they had taken three out of four points.
