NAIVE DOWNES HAS BEEN A REAL WALLY OVER BETTING AFFAIR

BY THE time you read this, Wally Downes may be out of a job. If not, he is a lucky man.
Downes, 58, was suspended as manager of AFC Wimbledon in late September after being charged by the FA with eight counts of betting on football matches.
He later admitted breaching gambling rules and was banned from all football activities for 28 days.
Whilst the nature of the bets has not been disclosed, the relative leniency of the sanction confirms they were harmless. Nobody is saying Downes chucked a game or deliberately influenced a result but he made himself sackable.
