GILLINGHAM sprung a surprise by sacking manager Steve Lovell on the eve of yesterday’s home game against Charlton.
The 58-year-old had spent 18 months in the hotseat at Priestfield and had another year left on his contract. He left with the Gills in 13th place in League One and virtually assured of their status.
In a statement on Friday, the Gills said: “After a discussion between the chairman and manager this afternoon, the club can confirm that Steve Lovell has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
