IT SEEMS indescribably cruel that a man as young and fit as Stephen Darby could be struck by an illness as debilitating as motor neurone disease.
Yet the Bolton defender is not the first footballer to suffer. In 2003, researchers from the Italian Higher Institute of Health looked at every player in Serie A and B between 1960 and 1997.
The four-year study found that eight of those 24,000 players had died from MND. In the general population, the figure was 0.69 in every 24,000. Further research showed another 37 had died or fallen ill since 1997.
