DETRACTORS of the Video Assistant Referee often cite the “down the pub” argument as a reason to keep technology out of football.
The gist is that disallowed goals and dodgy penalties are hot topics down the Dog & Duck. That to end such debates would sap the game of its life and flavour. Sorry, but that’s weak. I don’t know what kind of Partridgean bores these people knock about with, but if anyone started droning on about refereeing decisions at my table, I’d down my Guinness and head for the door.
