Few in the profession understand that adage like Steve Cotterill, the new man at the helm of struggling Birmingham City.
Financial meltdown, shonky owners, empty dressing rooms - the 53-year-old old has seen it all in the 20 years since he led Cheltenham out of the Conference.
Indeed, it says much about his previous appointments that languishing 22nd in the Championship with one win in nine represented a cushy little number.
