Matthew Dennis boosts Carlisle’s League Two survival hopes with deciding goal in derby

Matthew Dennis ended Carlisle’s 374-minute goal drought as he scored the only goal of the game in the Cumbrian derby at Barrow.

More than 900 travelling Carlisle fans were treated to Mark Hughes’ first win since taking charge, ending a six-game winless run, as they gave their survival hopes a major shot in the arm with a 1-0 win at Holker Street.

It was a much-needed victory which moved the club two points adrift of safety in Sky Bet League Two.

Wasteful Barrow dominated the early exchanges but saw Emile Acquah, Kyle Cameron and Robbie Gotts — who hit the post — all squander chances.

Dennis broke the deadlock with Carlisle’s first opportunity as he tucked home from Cedwyn Scott’s backheel in the 19th minute.

Kian Spence, whose effort flew wide, and Acquah, who should have done better when he nodded off target, both went close before the break.

Elliot Embleton’s lofted effort landed on the roof of the net for the visitors after half-time.

Ben Jackson produced a powerful effort with 20 minutes to go before Carlisle goalkeeper Gabriel Breeze kept out both Tyler Smith and Acquah as the visitors held on for a welcome three points.
