Grant McCann: Luke Molyneux showed why he’s the best right forward in the league

Doncaster boss Grant McCann hailed Luke Molyneux’s character after the in-form forward scored twice in his side’s 3-1 win at Barrow in League Two.

Molyneux recovered from an early collision with Barrow goalkeeper Paul Farman to score his 11th and 12th goals of the season and move Rovers up to second in the table.

The second one came from a cross-turned-shot but McCann was not entirely sure it was a fortunate effort.

McCann said: “To be honest, Farman should be off in the early part of the game. It’s a straight red for me. When you look at it back he’s got Luke Molyneux right on the shin.

“After that Mols has shown his character to get himself up and score two goals for us.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he meant that second goal. That’s the form he’s in at this moment in time.

“He’s on a great run. He went on a run around this time last season as well. Hopefully he can carry this form on and keep scoring.

“I’m delighted for him. He’s had a bit of a tough time, I’ve spoken about it before, but he’s come back and responded and shown why he’s the best right forward in this league.”

McCann is pleased with the consistency his side are showing in their promotion push.

He added: “I’m really pleased with the performance. It’s a fourth win in a row when you include the FA Cup.

“I’m really pleased with how the boys are performing at the minute and the consistency they’re showing.

“We have to keep it going. On to the next one, it’s another tough game against MK Dons on Saturday.

“We’re limiting teams to very little opportunities on our goal.”

Barrow briefly flirted with a comeback after Emile Acquah halved the deficit to 2-1 as Robbie Gotts’ delivery cannoned off his knee.

But it failed to spark the revival the Bluebirds desperately needed as Andy Whing endured his first defeat since taking charge.

After a dream start to life in Cumbria with a 3-0 win over Grimsby on Saturday, this provided a tougher test as Whing was brought back down to earth.

He said: “Ultimately I’m really frustrated that we’ve lost a game of football, I’m really disappointed with that.

“I don’t think it was a 3-1 if I’m honest. They’ve scored three goals, but two of them are from set pieces, the third one he’s crossed it into the top corner.

“They’re a very good team. But I didn’t feel they opened us up in the game.

“The mistake compounds the first goal and then all the confidence we gained from Saturday kind of evaporated.

“We gave it a right go in the second half without really creating too much.

“There are a lot of positives to take, but disappointed that we lost the game.”
