Match Preview: Salford City v Gillingham (Saturday, 3pm)

Salford City host Gillingham on Saturday at the Peninsula Stadium in League Two.

In their last league match, on Tuesday, Salford drew with Colchester United 1-1 at home, with their goal scored by Matt Smith.

Gillingham won, 1-0 at home against Wrexham on February 24, with Timothee Dieng scoring their goals.

In Matt Smith, Salford have one of the league’s most on-form strikers so far this season. He has notched 22 goals in 35 appearances, to sit second in the scoring charts.

Gillingham’s top scorers, with five goals each, are Connor Mahoney and Conor Masterson.

With 32 goals in 34 games so far this season, the Gills are the league’s lowest scorers with 0.9 goals per game. But they are conceding fewer than average too, letting in 39 goals at a rate of 1.1 per game.

City, meanwhile, are average scorers, with 1.5 goals per game. They have conceded 1.8 goals per game.

The Ammies are 19th in the table after 35 games, of which they have won 10 and drawn 10, earning 40 points.

The away team are 11 places ahead of the hosts in eighth, with 15 wins and six draws putting them on 51 points.

In the last three years, Salford and Gillingham have played each other on three occasions. Salford won one of them and Gillingham the other.

Their last meeting was on November 18, when Gillingham won 3-1 at home.

Salford are in mixed form in League Two, with two wins and three draws from their last six games.

And also with two wins and three draws over that period, Gillingham’s form is identical – they have both taken nine points from 18.
