WIGAN Athletic climbed to second place with a hardfought victory against Nor thampton Town – ending Jimmy F loyd Hasselbaink’s unbeaten star t as Cobblers boss.
Winger Michael Jacobs, who began his career at Northampton, scored the only goal of the game with a long-range effort in the 56th minute.
The victory lifted Paul Cook’s men to within three points of surprise early leaders Shrewsbury.
After two wins and draw in his first three matches in charge, ex-Burton and QPR boss Hasselbaink suffered his first defeat since taking the Northampton reins.
