Burton and Crawley play out goalless stalemate

Burton and

League One strugglers Burton and Crawley fought their way to a point apiece in a goalless draw at the Pirelli Stadium.

Albion remain winless in the league so far but halt a run of seven straight defeats.

Burton bossed long periods of the first half but could not find a breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes.

Tomas Kalinauskas, scorer of the winner in Saturday’s FA Cup first-round victory fired straight at visiting goalkeeper Connal Trueman twice in a minute on the quarter-hour mark and Ben Whitfield also found the waiting arms of the keeper.

Charlie Webster sent a rising effort over the crossbar from a Burton corner midway through the half and Whitfield thought he had broken the deadlock, racing onto Max Crocombe’s long clearance and firing home, only to be denied by a tight offside decision.

Crawley substitute Panutche Camara twice forced Crocombe into fine saves with 20 minutes remaining as the visitors built up a head of steam and sensed victory was there for the taking.

Ultimately neither side found the quality in attack to grab a decisive goal in a draw that does little for either teams’ plight at the bottom end of League One.
