Wednesday’s EFL round-up: Mitrovic breaks Championship goal record

DELIGHTED boss Marco Silva paid tribute to hot-shot Aleksandar Mitrovic after the striker scored twice against Peterborough on Wednesday night to break the Championship era goalscoring record.

The Serbian’s 32nd goal of the season, from the penalty spot, put him clear of Ivan Toney’s mark for Brentford last season and then he added his 33rd goal with a sidefoot volley, before Jack Marriott pulled one back for Posh at the death.

Victory took the Whites nine points clear at the top of the table.

Silva said: “The numbers speak for themselves. Thirty-three goals at the end of February, with 14 more games to play, it’s fantastic.

“What I like about him is he’s always demanding more and more and more. He knows that from tomorrow I’ll demand more and more from him.”

There was plenty of late drama in the Championship, with ten-man QPR grabbing an 89th minute winner to beat Blackpool.

Jimmy Dunne’s header put Rangers ahead before Dion Sanderson saw red for a headbutt on 40 minutes.

Josh Bowler equalised for the Seasiders eight minutes from time against his old, but Luke Amos flicked home a cross from fellow sub George Thomas late on to give QPR a priceless 2-1 win that moved them third.

Huddersfield climbed to fourth with a late comeback against Cardiff. Town were 1-0 down courtesy of a Tommy Doyle goal entering the final five minutes, but Josh Koroma equalised with two minutes to play and Jon Russell won it for the Terriers in the 96th minute.

Ten-man Sheffield United also left it late to beat faltering Blackburn. Two minutes into stoppage time Ben Davies turned home a corner to give the Blades a crucial 1-0 win to move them back into the play-off places.

Earlier, the Blades’ Charlie Goode had been sent off for a two-footed tackle and keeper Wes Foderingham brilliantly saved a penalty from Rovers’ Reda Khadra.

Luton remain hot on the heels of the play-off places thanks to a 2-1 win at Stoke with goals from Danny Hylton and Cameron Jerome. Lewis Baker pulled one back for the Potters.

Derby’s survival hopes took a hit as they lost 2-1 to Millwall. Jed Wallace and Tyler Burey gave the Lions a 2-0 first half lead, making a late Jake Cooper own goal immaterial.
