PORTSMOUTH and Sunderland served up a Christmas feast, but it was the Pompey fans singing after seeing Kenny Jackett’s table-topping side opening up an eight-point lead over the Black Cats.
The first half had all the feel of a top-of-the-table clash but, with limited chances, the game was turned on its head during a frantic 20-minute spell after half-time. Glenn Loovens’ dismissal for hauling down Oli Hawkins gave Sunderland a mountain to climb, especially after Gareth Evans had converted the resulting penalty.
