After all, the 18-yearold didn’t play a single minute of the 21 miserable games that left the
Mackems facing a slice of unwanted history. Unscarred and untainted, the young striker may just be the symbol of Sunderland’s rebirth.

Whatever happens, he is testament to Coleman’s guts. Not many managers would turn to a pair of callow 18-year-olds in their hour of need and the Welshman’s fearlessness bodes well.
