LEAGUE ONE MIDWEEK ROUND-UP

HERO: Dan Udoh celebrates his winner

DELIGHTED Wycombe manager Mike Dodds hailed a ‘really gutsy performance’ after his side bagged three precious points at Huddersfield on Tuesday.

Following a goalless home draw against basement side Shrewsbury and a 1-0reverse at Reading last weekend, the Chairboys badly needed a victory to stay on the coat-tails of second-placed Wrexham.

It’s the only automatic promotion place still up for grabs after runaway leaders Birmingham clinched promotion with a 2-1triumph at Peterborough (see centre pages).

Dan Udoh proved to be Wycombe’s hero as he fired home the only goal shortly after the hour mark.

“That’s a just reward for the previous two performances,” said Dodds. “It was a different type of performance. It wasn’t as fluid and controlled in terms of possession, but this is a really good Huddersfield team regardless of league position.

“We knew it would be a difficult evening, but the players executed exactly what we wanted from them.” Noel Hunt’s Reading climbed into the play-off berths with a 3-1win at doomed Shrewsbury. Lewis Wing (34 minutes), Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan (53) and Chem Campbell (72) were on target for the Royals, with Taylor Perry (48) replying for the Shrews.

Reading leapfrogged Bolton, who went down to a shock 1-0home reverse against Rotherham. Sam Nombe rifled home the winner on 11 minutes as the Millers staged a smash-and-grab raid to make it three wins in a row under Matt Hamshaw.

Charlie Kelman was again the star for Leyton Orient, scoring twice in their entertaining 3-2success at Mansfield. Dilan Markanday (39) notched the O’s first before Kelman took centre stage with goals on 54 and 69 minutes, the latter a superb curler into the top corner.

Dom Dwyer (3) and sub George Maris (62) were on target for the Stags.

Exeter and Wigan had to settle for a share of the spoils, drawing one-apiece at St James Park. Dale Taylor gave the Latics the lead from the penalty spot in the 51st minute, but Exeter got back on terms through Reece Cole with just over 20 minutes left.

● In League Two, Chesterfield and Gillingham drew 1-1. Elliott Nevitt gave the visiting Gills a 14th-minute lead, but experienced marksman Will Grigg fired home at the near post on 77 minutes to earn the hosts a point. It made it four draws in a row for new Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth.
